What Is Periodontitis and Gingivitis and How Do They Affect Your Mouth?

Periodontal disease is prevalent in adults over 30 years of age, with prevalence increasing with age. Men are more susceptible than women to periodontal disease.

Plaque is a sticky, odourless, colourless film that forms on the teeth. Improper brushing leads to plaque accumulation, which leads to gum diseases.

Treatment of Gingivitis includes maintaining good oral hygiene, removing plaque and tartar, and using mouthwash with chlorhexidine to curb oral bacteria.

Periodontitis is a more serious form of gum infection, caused by the accumulation of tartar on the teeth. It can destroy the gum tissues and underlying bone structure that support the teeth.

Untreated Gingivitis leads to Periodontitis when the bacteria in the plaque release toxins, which trigger an inflammatory response, causing further damage to the gums and bone tissue.

Poor oral hygiene practices lead to plaque accumulation, which feeds bacteria that irritate your gums and cause inflammation.

There are many factors that cause gum inflammation, such as medication, excessive carbohydrates, sugar-rich foods and vitamin C deficiency. Gingivitis and Periodontitis are worsened by these factors.
